Good nutrition is the cornerstone for everyone’s better health. For people experiencing homelessness, access to a high quality diet is not guaranteed, and this can have profound negative consequences to physical and mental health.

In the context of the cost-of-living crisis, many of us will struggle to manage a healthy diet. For people experiencing homelessness this can be compounded by lack of cooking facilities and storage, financial barriers and additional dietary needs. Often, people experiencing homelessness can present with poor physical and mental health, and substance dependence, all of which have a negative impact on dietary health.

What does the nutrition subgroup do?

Although everyone can see that nutrition is a pressing issue for people experiencing homelessness, there are few practical supports available. There are pockets of pioneering practice emerging across the country, working isolation. The nutrition subgroup aims to build a community of practice around nutrition, and create connections to enable shared learning about how we can collectively boost the nutrition of people experiencing homelessness.

We welcome anyone with an interest in nutrition. Led by dietitians, we hold quarterly meetings, and oversee and support various nutrition projects throughout the year. We aspire to inform policy-makers and commissioners, undertake vital research, and develop dietary guidelines and useful information leaflets.

Together, we can build resources to support people experiencing homelessness to have an improved and dignified diet.
